Summer 2022

College Essay Workshop

With Common App opening up in August, many of us (including myself!) are stressing about how to write application essays.

This in-person workshop will help develop the skills needed to write essays for both Common App and the UC system. We’ve invited very accomplished speakers to share their experiences with the application system and various tips and tricks for writing. At the end of the workshop, you’ll also have the opportunity to write an essay and receive feedback!

How to Study for Finals

Have you struggled with studying for finals? Studying for finals is often seen as a very daunting task as you need to learn and review EVERYTHING you’ve learned throughout the semester.

This seminar is targeted towards learning new study techniques for each core subject, and the skills presented have the potential to carry you through not only middle school and high school but university as well! You’ll hear from many amazing high school students and how they study for each subject as well as ways to balance your studies with your hobbies and extracurriculars.

Jobs Seminar

What exactly does an engineer or computer programmer do? What makes a job rewarding? What career should I enter after high school/university?

Find the answers to these questions and more at Sunshine Education’s Job Seminar 2022. We’ve invited professionals from the fields of business, medicine, law, engineering, and computer science to come talk about their jobs: their day-to-day tasks and their favourite parts. There will also be time for you to ask them your burning questions!

Sunshine Education Annual Summit

This year, our summit seminar centers around opportunities that students can seize during high school that are targeted towards/explore the field that they are interested in pursuing.

We have experienced speakers for each field, all of whom have lots to share about their high school experience and how they were able to explore the field that they are currently studying! This is a free, drop-in event, so be sure to check the schedule below.

Sunshine Education Holiday Debate

With the holiday season coming up, there’s no better way to celebrate than with a casual, holiday-themed debate! This debate is a great, low-pressure, opportunity for anyone in grades 7-9 to qualify for regionals. There will be 2 impromptu rounds, both with a holiday-related motion.

As this is an ADSA debate, you must register through your school. More information on registration, debater fees and requirements, as well as the schedule, can be found on the official ADSA website!

Summer 2021

Sunshine Team Challenge

June 25, 2021, 4pm-7pm

Sunshine, Inc. is hiring! Come to Sunshine Education’s interdisciplinary contest on June 25 to see if you and your team are good enough to get “hired” (and win some cool prizes).

What:
This academic contest simulates a job interview! You will be competing in a team of 2-4 against your peers to get “hired” by the company (us!). Don’t worry, you won’t have to actually join the exec team 🙂

This contest has three sections, on English, the sciences, and mathematics. Each section has puzzle-questions that will challenge you to exercise your problem-solving and creative skills. As you complete questions correctly, you will collect points, with the team with most points winning! The winning team will receive a prize ($10 gift cards from Righteous Gelato!). And, you will be competing against your peers and against time.

This is a chance to win prizes, solve puzzles, all while meeting new friends from other schools. And it’s free!

More specific details will be sent closer to the date.

Who:
This is open to students in grade 7-9 only. This is for the sake of fairness to all competitors.
You will be competing in teams of 2-4. If you have a team, please register together on one team registration form.
If you do not have a team, don’t worry! Sign up on the individual registration form and we will pair you up.

Where:
This contest will be taking place on Discord! If you don’t have an account, don’t worry – it is easy and free to set one up. We will send out instructions on how to do so nearer to the date.

5:30- 6:00: math section
6:00- 6:30: English section

Spring 2021

Research Workshop

Are you in grade 9-11 and interested in developing the skills needed to carry out research efficiently and effectively? This one-time workshop will explore the basic skills needed to carry out research – whether that be for everyday school assignments, for an IB Internal Assessment, or for your projects outside of school.

A librarian from the University of Calgary will be showing you how to reference sources, how to form and answer a manageable research question, how to use online resources effectively, how to evaluate sources, how to use the rich research resources at the U of C, and more. These skills will be important throughout high school and university, so make sure to sign up!

Excel Skills Workshop

Excel is an important skill set necessary for every student in their high school journey, used in physics, chemistry, and math. Come to Sunshine Education’s Seminar on March 30 to learn how to easily make professional spreadsheets and graphs that will take your projects to the next level! We will be covering graph-making, formatting, keyboard shortcuts, as well as some specific tips for making better spreadsheets more efficiently. This class is targeted for students in Grades 6-9.

Winter 2019

Math Kangaroo

Seminar

  • This seminar is meant to help prepare grade 5&6 students for the Math Kangaroo contest on March 22, 2020. Taught by four high school students with plenty of experience writing math contests, we hope to unlock the full potential students!
  • There will be a total of three weekly classes, we will be going over lots of questions from previous Math Kangaroo questions.
  • We will be accepting 20 students on a first come first serve basis, so make sure to sign up ASAP!

SAT + ACT

Seminar

  • We know that standardized testing can be very stressful, so we’re here to give you all our experience on the SAT, ACT, and SAT Subject Tests.
  • This is a three-day seminar with lectures and hands-on test prep to familiarize and prep you for the SAT and ACT.
